The paper deals with the semantic content of three German loan words rocambole, schlass and schnorchel. These three lexical units belong to a set of lexical Germanisms, which have been subjected to a frequency analysis in the French modern written language and then to research as to what extent they are known and used by today's native speakers. These lexical units evince small shifts of meaning compared with their definitions which appear traditionally in the French monolingual dictionaries.

In this paper, we seek to assess the difficulties of translating register in literary discourse, on the basis of a corpus constituted by the translation and retranslation of Marguerite Duras' Moderato Cantabile into Romanian. Translating register is considered by most Translation Studies scholars as a primary criterion in assessing the quality of a translation. To what extent can the translator preserve the register features when rendering the text into the target language? How far do his/her subjective choices influence the cultural identity of the translated text? Does the practice of retranslation bring essential changes from this point of view?

Lois Bellaud de la Bellaudiera (1543-1588?) was one of the most outstanding Provencal poets of his time. Many scholars, such as Robert Lafont, claimed to see in him an important representative of language revival in the Provence region. In this context arises the question as to why Bellaud did not reflect neither use a reference to the antiquity of troubadour poetry, their literarily consecrated koiné, nor its traditional orthography, if he wanted to elevate and literarily re-establish his native language. That's despite the fact that the famous troubadour's past was only very recently restored by Jehan de Nostredame (1507-1577?) with his troubadour...

Feelings which arise from heartaches have inspired numerous literary works, novels particularly. This phenomenon was probably at its height during the second half of the nineteenth century. Although the theme of unrequited love seemed to be hackneyed at the beginning of the twentieth century, Alain Fournier and Raymond Radiguet gave it a new lease by proposing different but original writing modes to present the former through nostalgia in Le Grand Meaulnes and the latter through constraint in Le Bal du Comte d'Orgel. This article aims to show how this was achieved.

In his third novel The Island of the Day Before (L'isola del giorno prima) Umberto Eco narrates a story of an unusual castaway named Roberto who - instead of being on a desert island - finishes up on an abandoned (but only at first sight) ship. The article aims to analyze how the book's main character, during his loneliness, reminisces about events from his past. And because the novel is set in the Baroque, Roberto's memories respect the spirit of that time : numerous flashbacks are evoked by unexpected metaphors that link very distant things.
