Zdenìk Lorenc and his Translation Activities
Michal BAUER
Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):29-46 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.003
The translation activity of the Czech surrealist poet and writer Zdenìk Lorenc has been a part of Czech literature and Czech-French artistic relations for at least six decades and proves, among other things, his interest in the works of French writers and French art in general. Lorenc first made Tristan Tzara's work available in the Czech environment secretly in the 1940s for his friends. Later, he introduced it to a wider readership, especially in the 1960s and, posthumously, at the beginning of the 21st century. Lorenc's mediating work provides a remarkable picture of Tzara's reception and reflection in the Czech context.

The novel Le retour de l'ours by Quebec writer Catherine Lafrance represents one of the recent French-Canadian books inspired by the end of the world. It narrates the story of the inhabitants of an Inuit village in Canada's Far North, survivors of a climate apocalypse. Now a legend to them, the Apocalypse is accompanied by a prophecy of the return of a polar bear. When Aloupa, the village watchman, announces having spotted one, the peaceful existence of the villagers comes to an end. The return of the bear is a reflection on the Canadian Far North and its environment, changed after severe climatic cataclysms. A tale of ecological anticipation,...

Drawing on recent research by Sean Mills and David Austin, as well as in the context of the debate on the decolonization of Canadian history, the aim is to show the emergence of a new, more open, and direct approach to the problem of Quebec's relationship to otherness, as opposed to the political radicalization that we are observing nowadays. Based on the methodological tools of discourse analysis, this study will also aim to show the...
