From the couple's harmony to human breakdown in Racine's Bérénice

The essence of Jean Racine's work is said to lie in the depiction of love perceived as a trial for the human soul. It then becomes passion apprehended as a wide range of feelings which, once thwarted, go from tenderness and care to pride, jealousy and revenge. Titus and Bérénice are two characters who, throughout the course taken by their mutual love, exemplify the passage from the harmony that is supposed to prevail in the human soul, once in love, to the decay from the beauty and ethics of this feeling. The present article sets out to retrace the steps of this decline, from the viewpoint of the corrupted nature of the human being in the Jansenist vision of the world.
