The paper explores the relationship between literary and musical works withitin the domain of "interart studies," focusing ont he transgression between arts, a source of inspiration frequently found in the texts of authors of Haitian origin. In analyzing the works of Dany Laferrière, Ursula Mathis-Moser uses the term intermediality to describe the role of music and song in his writing. This article aims to reflect on the same subject in the works of his compatriot, Stanley Péan, a novelist and short story writer, also known as a music lover and lyricist. Literature Confronting Racism in Contemporary Intellectual Discourse in Quebec
Michal OBSZYÑSKI
Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):65-78 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.006
In this paper we will present the main lines of the debate around the idea of racism as approached by authors such as Pierre Nepveu, Marco Micone, Rodney Saint-Éloi, Natasha Kanapé Fontaine, and Dany Laferrière. Drawing on recent research by Sean Mills and David Austin, as well as in the context of the debate on the decolonization of Canadian history, the aim is to show the emergence of a new, more open, and direct approach to the problem of Quebec's relationship to otherness, as opposed to the political radicalization that we are observing nowadays. Based on the methodological tools of discourse analysis, this study will also aim to show the...

Dalibor ®ÍLA
Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):55-63 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.005
The novel Le retour de l'ours by Quebec writer Catherine Lafrance represents one of the recent French-Canadian books inspired by the end of the world. It narrates the story of the inhabitants of an Inuit village in Canada's Far North, survivors of a climate apocalypse. Now a legend to them, the Apocalypse is accompanied by a prophecy of the return of a polar bear. When Aloupa, the village watchman, announces having spotted one, the peaceful existence of the villagers comes to an end. The return of the bear is a reflection on the Canadian Far North and its environment, changed after severe climatic cataclysms. A tale of ecological anticipation,...

The paper shows that the book in question, conceived primarily as a tool for self-knowledge, is also a tool for understanding the world.

Zdenìk Lorenc and his Translation Activities
Michal BAUER
Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):29-46 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.003
The translation activity of the Czech surrealist poet and writer Zdenìk Lorenc has been a part of Czech literature and Czech-French artistic relations for at least six decades and proves, among other things, his interest in the works of French writers and French art in general. Lorenc first made Tristan Tzara's work available in the Czech environment secretly in the 1940s for his friends. Later, he introduced it to a wider readership, especially in the 1960s and, posthumously, at the beginning of the 21st century. Lorenc's mediating work provides a remarkable picture of Tzara's reception and reflection in the Czech context.

Agata RÊBKOWSKA
Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):17-27 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.002
The aim of the article is to show the role of the prefix ex- in constructing the social meaning of the proper noun l'URSS in French media discourse. Observing the syntactic context of the proper noun l'URSS where the prefix appears allowed for the distinction of three most common effects of its use : the actualization of the temporal meaning of the proper noun, the strengthening of the enunciator's anthropocentric perspective, and the use of the structure ex-URSS as a tool for categorization in contemporary news press. The analysis is based on press articles that appeared in the journals Le Monde, Le Figaro,...

"Field literature" in contemporary Quebec. A first theoretical overview, followed by some concrete examples
Eva VOLDØICHOVÁ BERÁNKOVÁ
Écho des études romanes 2023, 19(2):121-130 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2023.021
The article analyzes the notion of “field literature”, recently introduced by Dominique Viart, and questions the extent to which it would be applicable to certain contemporary Quebec novels. On the example of La Femme qui fuit (Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, 2015), Kuessipan (Naomi Fontaine, 2019) and Encabanée (Gabrielle Filteau-Chiba, 2018), it demonstrates that, on the one hand, there is a similarity of approaches between today’s French literary theory and Canadian book production. However, at the same time, the three novels examined express a specifically Canadian sensibility which only partially corresponds...

The collection Roses by Louise Dupré, a Quebec poet, novelist, playwright, and by Anouk Van Renterghem, a Brussels artist, highlights a compelling synergy between the arts-literature and painting. This colorful collection engages both the eye and the ear, inviting to a musical perception of the poetic word, while retaining the scentof a particular spring. Roses stands out through the incorporation of the textual and graphic universe. Each poem is accompanied by a pastel in pink tones that enriches and complements the poetic text. Our focus is on the artistic strategies facilitating the correspondences, the analogies, and the union of...

De Vengeance (Of Revenge) by Julie D. Kurtness and Nauetakuan by Natasha Kanapé Fontaine : an urban Amerindianity?
Petr KYLOU©EK
Écho des études romanes 2023, 19(2):97-104 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2023.018
The literature of the First Nations constitutes a recent and, until now, specific stratum within Quebec literature. For a long time attached, both in poetry and in prose, to places of origin, such as reserves, forests, nature, and to stories oriented towards the past and traditions, it is beginning to permeate the urban space. What then becomes of urban modernity and how does it articulate with the identity modelling that accompanies Quebec literature as one of its components? To explore these questions, we examine two recent novels – De Vengeance by Julie D. Kurtness and Nauetakuan by Natasha Kanapé Fontaine – which offer...

Tacit but understood? A first immersion in ellipsis in Argentine colloquial interaction
Markéta ©MÍDOVÁ
Écho des études romanes 2023, 19(2):61-82 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2023.016
Existing research on ellipsis in Spanish has primarily relied on prototypical examples analogous to Anglophone literature, applying an a priori theoretical framework that involves the principle of economy, coordination, and polarity, along with a list of concepts such as gapping, sluicing, short answer. In response, this study presents initial observations on elliptical constructions in spontaneous spoken interaction based on its own sociolinguistically balanced oral corpus of Argentine Spanish. The core of the study is the description of data in a sequential context using the conversation analytic case-by-case method, aiming to highlight the...

A diachronic analysis of textile fibre terminology (18th - 21st centuries): terms for production, terms for marketing
Klára DAÒKOVÁ
Écho des études romanes 2023, 19(2):47-59 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2023.015
The aim of this study is to examine terminological variation in the field of textile fibres in French from the 18th century to the present day, with a focus on two communicative situations: production and marketing. The analysis is conducted on a corpus comprising different text types, published in the specified period. After a presentation of the theoretical framework and methodology, a typology of textile fibre names used in production (chemical names, code names, etc.) and marketing (brand names, trade names, etc.) is proposed. In addition, different types of references involved in the creation of these terms are analysed in order to formulate hypotheses...

LegTerm: project for a multilingual database of legal terms in national law
Jan RADIMSKÝ
Écho des études romanes 2023, 19(2):27-45 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2023.014
Designing a bilingual or multilingual lexicographic tool that captures the equivalences between legal terms in different national laws and helps translators understand the intended meaning poses a complex challenge. Legal terminology is characterized by non-corresponding concepts, term polysemy, and imprecise meanings. Existing tools either focus on content for legal professionals or provide simple word-form equivalences for translators. The LegTerm project aims to bridge this gap by offering a simple and efficient terminological tool that combines the advantages of a dictionary and an encyclopedia, catering to different legal systems and languages....

Relations within the conceptual fields of Czech and French law and their formalisation by lexical functions
Kateøina HODKOVÁ
Écho des études romanes 2023, 19(2):5-25 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2023.013
This paper presents relationships that exist among legal concepts within a selected domain. The domain is based on corpora created for the purpose of this study. All the described relationships are those of sense, but they are of different nature. We distinguish three groups: semantic relationships, relationships based on legal text and semantic roles. After delimiting key notions, such as “concept” and “term”, this study briefly describes each group of relationships and offers examples and analyses related to the presented data. We attempt to find a uniform way to formalize the relationships by using lexical functions...
