This paper surveys the morphological status of converse relations and of symmetric expressions. Thus far, they have received merely cursory descriptions underlining either solely their formal or solely their semantic properties. It is argued that, despite formal differences, these expressions do not alter the meaning of a sentence they give birth to. However, its functional structure (topic / comment partition) may be altered due to their use. From this point of view, converse relations resemble inflectional modifications (such as voice in verbal morphology, degree within adjectives, etc.) undergone by variable lexical items. The paper discusses the phenomenon of subjectivity in language through a specific linguistic item : the first person pronoun in French. Starting from the idea that deixis is related to subjectivity in a different manner than evaluative items are (e.g. adjectives like wonderful, boring, etc.), it aims to show that, whenever a deictic item appears in a discourse, it makes it subjective irrespective of the receiver's interpretation. La Princesse de Clèves by Mme de Lafayette was published in 1678 and was an immediate success. Even today it is believed to be the first modern French novel. From the very beginning the work had many imitators with Catherine Bernard, considered the most talented follower, with her pessimistic vision of love and human behaviour. In this paper, the world presented in Jean-Pierre Andrevon's prose is analysed. The subject matter of the short stories is taken into consideration, with a strong emphasis on classic fantastic motifs and the paratextual form and aspect. This results in the coexistence of traditional and modern elements.
