The Racinian character - an intertextual element, as stated in the prefaces to the tragedies

The essence of the tragedies in the XVII-th century French classicism consisted of both following in the footsteps of the Ancients and distancing themselves from them, in the attempt to accomplish formal perfection. Jean Racine's work is illustrative for this aesthetic credo. This article is structured on two levels. The former presents the institutionalised context where Racine writes, with the constraints this framework entails for his creative process, while the latter analyses Racine's allegiance and transgression to the general principles presiding over the coming into being of tragic characters, as stated by the writer himself in the prefaces to his tragedies.
