Variation in the expression of spatio-temporal relations in medieval French

The paper intends to show that lexical and syntactical diversity in the expression of spatio-temporal relations via relative pronouns or/and conjunctions in medieval French is a function - at least in certain cases, though these could be very few - of enunciative and discursive peculiarities of the texts. To this end, we turn our attention to the medieval usage of où and quand and of the concurrent forms serving to express spatial and temporal localization respectively. We make a brief survey of their variations and changes relying on an examination of an Old French corpus which, though restricted, is built up of texts of different genres, which pertain both to scripturality intended to be transmitted or performed vocally and to conceptional scripturality, or scripturality proper (one which could remain unmediated by voice). This survey shows that it is incumbent on où to have a variety of temporal usages, although it is principally used as a locative pro-form. The most numerous occurrences of temporal où, without antecedent, have been found in the genre of epic poetry (which represents basically the scripturality intended to be transmitted vocally). We assume that this distribution is due to the specificity of the enunciation in praesentia of the chansons de geste: a kind of enunciation which probably suggests the most perfect expression of the unity of space and time, from the point of view of the texts' interpretation, performance and perception.
