Description of the indescribable in the work of Jules Verne
The poetics of description gave rise to a lot of scholar work during the last decade. Can everything be described with words? This paper lays the foundations of a poetics of non-description based on various novels by Jules Verne. For this author, description aims at representing the world of course. Yet one can find in his novels traces of some impossible attempt to description. The paper analyses the various causes for this impossibility which sometimes results in absolute clichés. Jules Verne willingly uses a real stereotype in his novels: « it is impossible to portray… ». And yet he does portray anyway…: the analysis of a paradox.
