On the valence of adjectives in Italian

Ignazio Mauro MIRTO

Écho des études romanes 2008, 4(2):5-21 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2008.017

Following an analysis by Guglielmo Cinque based on the different behaviour that adjectives manifest in certain contexts, a number of authors either maintain or take for granted that adjectives, as verbs, divide into transitive and intransitive, and that, among the intransitives, unergative and unaccusative adjectives have to be distinguished. This paper defends the view that adjectives are uniformly unaccusative, and provides a body of evidence to show that when adjectives do show different behaviours the difference cannot depend on their argument structure. Since the main theoretical consideration motivating the split of adjectives is the Lexicalist...

Dynamique socioculturelle et médias : causes et conséquences de la médiatisation de la « langue des jeunes »French

Sociocultural dynamics and the mass media: reasons and consequences of promotion of youth slang in the mass media

Alena PODHORNÁ-POLICKÁ

Écho des études romanes 2008, 4(2):23-38 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2008.018

This paper aims to analyse the reasons of an increasing promotion of youth slang in the mass media nowadays. Young people everywhere have similar psychological and sociological motivations to use nonstandard vocabulary and to create neologisms, but it's mainly due to the sociocultural atmosphere in a society that this generational slang has begun to be highlighted in the mass media. The youth slang from French suburban areas is a particular case of a variety based on the social, ethnic and/or spatial marginality of its speakers. The two main results of the recent media interest in this slang are the integration of its vocabulary into a 'common...

Description de l’indescriptible chez Jules VerneFrench

Description of the indescribable in the work of Jules Verne

Jean-Pierre GOLDENSTEIN

Écho des études romanes 2008, 4(2):39-52 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2008.019

The poetics of description gave rise to a lot of scholar work during the last decade. Can everything be described with words? This paper lays the foundations of a poetics of non-description based on various novels by Jules Verne. For this author, description aims at representing the world of course. Yet one can find in his novels traces of some impossible attempt to description. The paper analyses the various causes for this impossibility which sometimes results in absolute clichés. Jules Verne willingly uses a real stereotype in his novels: « it is impossible to portray… ». And yet he does portray anyway…: the analysis of a paradox.

August Strindberg et le théâtre français après 1945French

August Strindberg and French theatre after 1945

Tomasz KACZMAREK

Écho des études romanes 2008, 4(2):53-66 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2008.020

The vastness and unquestionable relevance of August Strindberg's work did not immediately have a great resonance in France. Although his early dramas, which had led him to naturalism, had enjoyed a certain notoriety at the beginning of the last century, no one remembered, except Artaud, his theatre, which was born following a profound crisis that he himself described as Inferno. This second phase of the Swedish writer's dramaturgical production, marked by anguish and hallucinations, renewed the theatrical structures first of all in an expressionistic sense. And it was precisely this work that would only be fully recognised after the Second World War...
