In 1753 Chevrier publishes Mémoires d’une honnête femme écrits par elle-même where the author aims to subvert conventional mémoires giving voice to a female character, in contrast to traditional mémoires describing a whole life of a male character. Chevrier focuses on a short period comprising Julie's marriage and her choice to finish her days in a convent. Using typical elements characterizing libertine and sentimental novels, the writer joins some components defining roman noir (Noir fiction) and picaresque novel passing from one genre to another without any sense of transition. Taking into consideration heterogeneous inter-textual...

Les Lettres d'Amabed, etc. is an epistolary tale written by Voltaire and first published in 1769. While its narrative appears to be a partial rewriting of Madame de Graffigny's Lettres d'une Péruvienne, several aspects of its general structure reflect well-known archetypes of the epistolary genre. More than a canonic attempt at creating an epistolary novel, the tale appears rather as a badinage with the traditional codes of epistolary writing. It particularly resonates with two novels that embody the dominant paradigms of the epistolary field: the "exotic" vein characterized by the Lettres Persanes (Montesquieu, 1721) and the "sentimental"...

The study researches to what extent the main means of artistic expression of the first phase of surrealism, the automatic text, can be operational in drama, the genre which is essentially based on acceptable significations. Firstly, the characteristics of the automatic text are made precise as to stylistics and pragmatics (motivation), and confronted with motivation principles in a dialogue. Subsequently , the study develops an analysis of a scene included in one of the earliest surrealist plays, S'il vous plaît, by the duo Breton - Soupault, published in Les Champs magnétiques in 1920. The analysis focuses on the act I - a very short...

From narrative to poem: Cendrars's uses of nominal phrases

This paper deals with a specific mix of literary genres in Cendrars's L'or. We focuse on the analysis of lyrical forms in narrative texts, in particular, on the polyfunctionality of sentences which do not include verbs. It is hypothesised that the uses of sentences without verbs in narrative texts represent a minimalist form of poeticity that we try to describe by proposing a certain typology of the roles that these features play in narrative writings.

Écho des études romanes 2016, 12(1):49-63 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2016.005
The present article deals with the role of the movement in the Quebec novel Apocalypse for beginners (Tarmac) published by Nicolas Dickner in 2011. Firstly, the movement made by the protagonists in space is observed. In some parts of the novel the travel is real, sometimes it's virtual but the movement is always performed between the periphery and the centre, between here and elsewhere. Subsequently, the attention is paid to the temporal dimension of travel and to the movement between the present, past and future. Finally, the article focuses on the permeability of the notions of space and time.
Espace et exclusion du personnage dans La Vie de Marianne de Marivaux et La Trahison de Marianne de Bernard NangaFrench
Character’s space and exclusion in Marivaux's La Vie de Marianne and Bernard Nanga's La Trahison de Marianne

Écho des études romanes 2016, 12(1):65-75 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2016.006
Space is one of the categories that enable a novel to be read by situating the story. Thus it should guarantee the mixture of the characters. But in Marivaux's La Vie de Marianne and Bernard Nanga's La Trahison de Marianne, space materializes the power of the dominating class, and testifies to the exclusion of the protagonists, unveiling the representations of ones and others. Marianne discovers the inalterability of social classes while wandering in the different social orders, the main character of Bernard Nanga is confronted to xenophobia, due to spatial discrimination. The authors deprecate societies in which foreigners are excluded....

Écho des études romanes 2016, 12(1):77-86 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2016.007
The purpose of this article is to introduce an analysis of Néstor Ponce's poems compiled in the book « Desapariencia no engaña » (2010). Forced to flee the country to escape the dictatorship (1976-1983), the Argentinian writer went into exile in France in 1979. With the restoration of democracy, the author did not return to his home country but continued to live in France. More than twenty years after the dictatorship, Néstor Ponce defies space and time to return to that tragic moment in history and takes his pen to remember. Never to forget « los desaparecidos » never to forget the places of torture, never to forget the horror,...
