When feigning and envying attack the sacred: thoughts on the dissonant representations of the Abbey de Gênes-sur-Mer in the Moniage Guillaume I

Ján ®IVÈÁK

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):47-58 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.005

The present study aims to analyse the dissonant representations of the Gênes-sur-Mer abbey in the Moniage Guillaume I (William in the monastery I), a 12th-century Old French heroic epic. The singularity of this paradoxical locus resides in the discrepancies that the text establishes between two mental projections doubling, within the plot, the physical modality of the monastery. Whilst the mental projection of the abbey shaped by the fictional conscience of the monastic community shows several spatial attributes of a sacred locus (a cosmos), in the eyes of the narrator, the monastery is equated with a moral chaos. This study attempts to...

The article deals with the notion of space in the works of historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874), more precisely in his text Tableau de la France, which is included in the Michelet's life's work: Histoire de France. The aim of the article is to present the complexity of Michelet's texts and at the same time to demonstrate the coexistence of the scientific and literary discourse which is typical for all the Michelet's works. The article presents firstly the historical thinking of Michelet in the context of the romantic historiography, most importantly his concept of "historical resurrection". Then it explains the specific position of Tableau...

The use of space in three stories by Marcel Schwob: towards the fantastic

Kévin FRANÇOIS

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):71-81 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.007

Despite the difficulties that may arise when we try to define the fantastic, it is possible to adopt a specific theoretical point of view enabling us to mobilise this genre. Once such a position was adopted, we tried, through this study, to analyse how Marcel Schwob uses space in three of his tales: "Le Roi au masque d'or", "Les Embaumeuses" and "Pays bleu", to create what could be called "fantastic effects ". Those spaces have been observed through the theory of Roman Ingarden, a polish phenomenologist, which helped us to estimate how much they can be modulated in order to create different reading effects.

Space and memory in Georges Perec's Lieux

Jagoda KRYG

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):83-92 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.008

Space is one of the most interesting motifs in the work of Georges Perec and a theme that the author has dealt with numerous times in his various novels and essays. For Perec, space is inextricably linked to the place of remembrance which keeps the memories of the past. The spaces associated with the mother and father of the author, of whom he had almost no memories left, have become for him the only places to look for the traces of the past, to find common bonds and to fill the void left by the war. What characterizes Perec's writing is the use of different strategies aimed at saving space from oblivion through the meticulous recording of its progressive...

The spatiality of writing - landscape and map

Ramona PÁL-KOVÁCS

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):93-103 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.009

After a brief summary of the spatial turn, which consists of the reinsertion of space and place into social sciences and humanities, this paper outlines the possibilities of a spatial reading of literature. For this, two main concepts are examined, landscape and map, in order to be able to outline a theoretical framework in which a spatial analysis of literary texts proves to be fruitful.

Folded space in White by Marie Darrieussecq

Judit LIPTÁK-PIKÓ

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):105-112 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.010

This study attempts to analyse and decipher the writing process in Marie Darrieussecq's 2003 novel White. As in her previous novels, White deals with ghosts and flows of consciousness. Some of the writings of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze prove to be particularly fruitful while interpreting space as depicted in the novel.

No easy way out. Andreï Makine's Siberian immensities, intimacies and intensities

Diana MISTREANU

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):113-127 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.011

This paper focuses on the image and the role of the chronotope of Soviet Siberia in three of Makine's novels: Le testament français, Au temps du fleuve Amour and L'amour humain. It argues that while the endless landscapes, harsh winters and political prisons which marked Siberia are indeed depicted in these texts, other - and more significant - dimensions are added to it, such as its representation as a land of individual freedom and - thanks to the discovery of French movies and literature on its territory - of intellectual growth. Thus, this paper proposes a complex and non-Manichaean reading of Makine's Siberia, hypothesising...

Space in the film adaptation of Bonheur d'occasion by Gabrielle Roy

Katarzyna WÓJCIK

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):129-140 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.012

Filmic adaptation of Gabrielle Roy's novel Bonheur d'occasion, published in 1945, by Claude Fournier (Bonheur d'occasion, 1983) proceed not only to a transposition of the literary text into the film but also to its reinterpretation. Space is one of the elements this reinterpretation is concerned with. Whereas part of the modifications are inevitable in the process of adaptation, others reveal the interpretation of the novel by the film director and have consequences on the identity discourse expressed by the film. The analysis of filmic adaptation, considered as interpretation of the source text, but not in terms of fidelity to the original,...

The kitchen of the marvelous : Jacques Ferron and Les roses sauvages

Petr KYLOU©EK

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):141-147 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.013

The analysis of Jacques Ferron's novel Les roses sauvages follows three paths: the implication of the marvelous and of the mythemes of the tale Sleeping Beauty in a novelistic text, the spatial arrangement and the semantisation of spatiality, the complementary relation between the fictional (novel) and the non-fictional narratives (Ferron's nosology of a patient and her own testimony). In this narrative configuration, the central theme of madness receives a specific focus. The novel functions as a bridge between the universal and the individual by deepening and completing Ferron's polemical reflection and by transfiguring a patient's...

Le fantastique réel de Franz Hellens. Genèse et conceptionFrench

Franz Hellens' real fantasy. Origin and conception

Renata BIZEK-TATARA

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):5-14 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.001

This article focuses on the genesis and conception of the fantastique réel of Franz Hellens (1881-1972), a Francophone Belgian writer. Before defining its nature, the author goes back to the genesis of the term, to Edmond Picard and his characteristic of Belgian literature, as well as to the Hellens' conception of fantastic as a literary genre. She then studies Hellens' fiction to identify the essence of her fantastique réel which is based on the harmonious reconciliation of the real and unreal, as well as the function of the gaze and dream in the discovery of the supernatural in the real.

Présence éditoriale du Nouveau roman en PologneFrench

Editorial presence of the New Novel in Poland

El¿bieta SKIBIÑSKA

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):15-31 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.002

The aim of this paper is to study the factors of the intraduction (Ganne, Minon 1992) of works written by the nouveau roman authors to the Polish literary space. The translation is understood here as the publication, i.e. the result of the publishing process which determines the diffusion of the text in the target market (Wilfert-Portal, Guérin 2012). After a bibliometric (quantitative) survey of the Polish translations of nouveau roman novels, we submitted its results to qualitative interpretations (also taking into account the editorial peritexts) which showed that there is a relatively regular, though not systematic, transfer of nouveau roman works...

Man and virility in Italian migrant fiction

Karol KARP

Écho des études romanes 2018, 14(1):33-41 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2018.003

The present article deals with the concept of masculinity and the male character in texts characterized as Italian migrant literature. The paper comprises three parts, the first of which focuses on the characters depicted as real men, the second observes those with a tendency to contradict their own masculinity, and the third discusses those that are entirely deprived of it. The reflections on masculinity are set against the social, psychological and sexual backdrops. The analysis features the novels of Lilin, Melliti and Khouma, and a short story by Scego that outlines the various figures of man in migrant literature. In its variety, the story allows...
