Using as an example the feminine "amatrice", the article aims at analysing the way of how the grammatical discourse (grammars, dictionaries, treatises on grammar etc.) in France in the 17th and 18th centuries tackles the formation of feminine nouns suffixed with -trice. It is especially Butet (1801) who seems to go beyond the traditional discourse based on concepts like analogy, necessity and euphony, taking advantage of recent advances in the way of how the nomenclature of chemistry was updated.

The article focuses on the lexical particularities of the French language used in Belgium. Even if the French used in France and the French used in Belgium are successively converging, certain differences in the vocabulary are still observable. In Wallonia, Belgian French is influenced especially by Walloon and by other Romance languages and dialects used in this territory and in the bilingual Bruxelles, it is influenced by Dutch. As in other regional varieties of French, the archaic and dialectal units may be found in Belgian French. The Belgians also have a somewhat different approach to anglicisms than the French.

The process of translation does not only involve going from one language to another, but also from one reality to another, from one extra-linguistic world to another. The comparison between the first translation in French by Marcel Aymonin in 1968 of La Plaisanterie (The Joke) by Milan Kundera and the second translation, revised by the author and Claude Courtot in 1985, reveals the choices that every translator must do concerning the extra-linguistic differences he faces. Postmodern condition involves an inquiry about modern history and its inheritance. The article is about a possible postmodernity of Machiavelli, whose thought is so interesting nowadays for many politicians and historians of culture as well. A field of research for new forms of literary expression, the short form represented a heterogeneous and amorphous character at the time of Symbolism in Belgium. This thematic-formal disparity resulted from the symbolist aesthetic, aimed at permanent questioning, and consequently from the conflictual relationship that the Belgian symbolists, mostly poets, established with narrative material. Maurice Maeterlinck, with his narrative work, which is both aesthetically and poetically irregular, is one of the greatest exponents of Symbolist prose.

Mme de Sevigné was neither a novel writer nor a literary critic. She was an erudite and a woman of the world, frequenting salons where disputes and discussions, often about literature, were conducted.In the 17th century, the novel was by no means treated as a literary genre since Aristotle never mentioned it in his Poetics. But it was the novel that was the most frequently read.
